Non-standard Problems in an Ordinary Differential Equations Course

International audience; We report first results from a teaching intervention in an ordinary differential equations (ODEs) course for engineering students. Our aim is to challenge traditional approaches to teaching of Existence and Uniqueness Theorems (EUTs) through the design of problems that students cannot solve by applying well-rehearsed techniques or familiar methods. We analyse how the use of nonstandard problems contributes to the development of students' conceptual understanding of EUTs and ODEs.

The Primary Scientific Contribution Is Hardly a Theory in Design Science Research

Generally, to publish a paper in a top IS journal, making a new theory contribution is, so we are told, required. Such a requirement also exists in Design Science Research (DSR) literature. We review a number of claims about the necessity of theory as it applies to DSR. We find these claims wanting. For example, medical research and engineering are both called “design science” in Simon’s(1996) Sciences of the Artificial. However, most articles in the top medical, computer engineering, and network engineering journals do not develop new theories. L'avvento del digitale come principale strumento della produzione umana segna l'epoca. Nel breve arcoo di una generazione, un nuovo strumentario visivo e concettuale si è imposto globalmente attraverso l'avvento dei linguaggi informatici e la diffusione dei sistemi digitali. In particolare i temi ed i metodi di progettazione hanno subito una rivoluzione del proprio strumentario tradizionale.Sembra si stia realizzand, grazie alla tecnologia, il sogno modernista di unificazione dei linguaggi creativi: il proliferare di nuovi tools (strumenti) informatici sembra dare corpo ai risultati sperimentali delle avanguardie storiche.
